What I think of when I think of the South

For this assignment, you are not expected to read or know anything--nor are you expected to be from the South. We grow up in America--whether in the South or elsewhere--with a variety of images, stereotypes, views, assumptions, beliefs, teachings, etc. about our entire nation, its ways, its peoples.

For this essay, you need to find an hour or so to yourself and just let the association of images and ideas about the South flow through your head: what comes to mind when someone uses the word South? What comes to mind when the South as an area, region or place is referred to?

What I am interested in here is not your reaction to other peoples' ideas--but your own ideas even though they may be derived from those of others. What do you think about the South? What comes to mind for you?

The ideas do not have to be "profound" or "academic" or "intellectual"--one student wrote about her grandmother's kitchen and the family life that centered around it; another has written about humidity; another about green things; another about seeing so many churches all over the place; another....etc.
