For general convenience, consider all structures to occupy a square or
rectangular footprint on their site. Begin at the 'front' [if that can be
determined] or at some reasonably prominent side, and photograph or record
the structure in a clockwise direction, taking each outside veiw along one of
the diagonals of the structure instead of directly along an axis of the structure.
Filming or recording from the oblique angle of the diagonal will cause your
images to show the next segment of the adjoining wall.
In your notes, label the first outside wall "A", the next "B" and so on. Take a complete cycle of images around the outside, then come back and document details [eve, cornice, window, door, etc.]. Then photograph the interior, starting from the inside of wall "A"--"E"-- and proceeding in a clockwise direction here as well: E, F, G, H. Next record the details of the interior walls. For the inside images, stand near the center of the structure and shoot along the axis of the wall instead of the diagonal. Use a flash inside.
Note: in complex structure--for instance, in certain kinds of barns--you may have to make a careful sketch of the floorplan and then record your photo sequence in order to accurately label your slides or photos afterward. If there are interior rooms or stalls, photograph these in the same clockwise fashion. Keep in mind that you may not get your images developed for a week or more and that you may forget details of location or relative position.
If you are using VHS to record a site or structure, use a simple narrative description as you walk around the building: "This is the front. This is the long side to the left; this is the left rear corner..., etc."
If possible use the 6"/6"/6" and 1' orange/white scales as reference marks in your photos. Prop or lean the scale rods next to the building for each of your images. For small details, use the 1"/6" scale or include a ballpoint pen in the photo.
Label your images as soon as you have them processed and keep a copy of your field notes for that site with those images. Turn in a copy of the site sketch with your images. Label the sketch with the name and location of the structure.
